Parathyroid cancer – clinical presentation, prognostic factors and long-term evolution

Jurecka-Lubieniecka Beata , Michalik Barbara , Bula Grzegorz , Gawrychowski Jacek , Kajdaniuk Dariusz , Marek Bogdan , Tukiendorf Andrzej , Jarzab Barbara

Background: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare endocrine malignancy affecting 0.5–5% of all patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Due to the rarity of PC there is still lack of prognostic implications of the disease and clear consensus regarding management. Our purpose was to evaluate prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of patients treated at the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Endocrine Oncology. Methods: The target group covered 44 ...

Concomitant occurrence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in a branchial cleft cyst (BCC) and an occult multifocal PTC in the thyroid gland

Szczepanek-Parulska Ewelina , Borowczyk Martyna , Kluk Alina , Dworacki Grzegorz , Orłowski Marcin , Ziemnicka Katarzyna , Ruchała Marek

Introduction: BCC is a congenital epithelial neck cyst, which occurs due to failure of the second branchial cleft to obliterate during embryogenesis. Development of PTC inside the cyst is extremely rare.Case description: A 29-year-old female presented to the endocrinology clinic with a gradually increasing painless mass in the right lateral region of the neck, identified on ultrasound examination as an anechoic cyst of size 2×2×5 cm with a smoo...

Objective: The management of pituitary tumors causing Cushing’s Disease are a multidisciplinary challenge to clinicians with neurosurgery as a first line treatment followed by the radiotherapy and pharmacotherapy including chemiotherapy.Such tumors are difficult to treat with high rate of recurrence. To date only 25 patients with Cushing Disease treated with the new alkylating agent temozolamide (TMZ) have been reported.Materials and methods: Sixty-...

gp91-phox in differential diagnosis of hyperplastic lesions in parathyroid gland

Segiet Oliwia , Deska Mariusz , Mielańczyk Łukasz , Brzozowa-Zasada Marlena , Buła Grzegorz , Helewski Krzysztof , Wojnicz Romuald

Introduction: Glycoprotein gp91-phox is an essential component of the NADPH oxidase. The superoxide-generating NADPH oxidase is present in phagocytes, neuroepithelial bodies, vascular smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. It includes a membrane-bound flavocytochrome containing two subunits, gp91-phox and p22-phox. gp91-phox is a significant element of the membrane-bound oxidase of phagocytes that generates superoxide. It is the terminal component of a respiratory chain th...

Trofimiuk-Muldner Malgorzata , Szybinski Zbigniew , Sokolowski Grzegorz , Stefanska Agnieszka , Buziak-Bereza Monika , Adamczewski Zbigniew , Lewinski Andrzej , Hubalewska-Dydejczyk Alicja

Thyroid function in pregnancy differs between populations. The aim of the study was to assess thyroid parameters in Polish pregnant women. It included 1095 pregnant volunteers aged 16–42 years (174, 501, 420 in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester, respectively), who gave their informed written consent. In each woman thyroid ultrasound was performed, 90.7% had TSH, fT4 and a-TPO measured, and 84.0% iodine urinary concentration (UIC) in urine spot sample estimated.<p class=...

Visualization of kallikreins in thyroid epithelial and carcinoma cells

Kroll Eileen , Pejkovska Anastasija , Rehders Maren , Lesner Adam , Dubin Grzegorz , Kantyka Tomasz , Fuhrer Dagmar , Potempa Jan , Brix Klaudia

Human tissue kallikreins (KLKs) are serine proteases expressed in various organs including thyroid hormone-generating and target tissues. Besides their involvement in important physiological processes, KLKs are mainly recognized for their association with pathological conditions like cancer. Previously, KLK2 and KLK3 transcripts were detected in normal thyroid and carcinoma tissue, while the levels and subcellular distribution of KLK proteins remained largely elusive. Since th...

Gonadal tumor incidence in 45,X/46,XY and 46,XY female patients: experience from one clinical center

Gawlik Aneta , Antosz Aleksandra , Zachurzok Agnieszka , Matusik Pawel , Kaminska Halla , Kudela Grzegorz , Koszutski Tomasz , Malecka-Tendera Ewa

Type II germ cell tumors are predictable complications in patients with disorder of sex development (DSD) and with Y chromosome present. The risk of tumor development varies significantly between subsets of DSD and in some cases early gonadectomy is perceived as overtreatment. The aim of the study was to analyze the gonadal tumor incidence in 45,X/46,XY and 46,XY patients who were reared as female and managed at single institution between 1997 and 2013.</...

Zawadzka Karolina , Matwiej Katarzyna , Sokołowski Grzegorz , Trofimiuk-Müldner Małgorzata , Skalniak Anna , Hubalewska-Dydejczyk Alicja

Introduction: The autoimmune process is currently the most common cause ofthe primary adrenal insufficiency cases in developed countries. The complexity of this process consists of genetic, immunological and environmental factors. It has been proven that vitamin D (VD) inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines and can modulate immune-regulatory mechanisms.Purpose: The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of VD insufficiencyin...
